Institute of Political Sciences

About the Institute of Political Science

The Institute of Political Science of FJPS UW is the oldest and biggest political science centre in Poland. It was founded in 1967 as a unit of the Faculty of Philosophy and became one of the biggest Institutes within FJPS UW around 35 years ago.

For many years the Institute has been a leader of independent rankings prepared by renowned socio-political magazines. Its high standards are also confirmed by the Education Quality Certification (granted by the University Accreditation Commission) as well as the positive assessment of the studies in political sciences issued by the State Accreditation Committee.

Attached to its beautiful traditions and history, the Institute of Political Science meets the challenges of the present times and faces the future with courage. This is visible not only in the systematic broadening of the academic offer but also in setting up the UW Political Science Analysis Centre.

Currently, the Institute’s rich academic offer contains two separate fields of study: POLITICAL SCIENCE and INTERNAL SECURITY. As one of the few academic centres, IPS UW offers its students the possibility of first (Bachelor’s degree studies) and second degree studies (Master’s degree studies) as well as post-graduate studies and studies conducted in English (Master's Degree Studies in Political Science) and Russian. Within every field and type of studies there are several specializations and study paths to choose from, which – combined with a wide choice of optional subjects and foreign language courses, interesting internships and the possibility of spending a semester at a partner university abroad within the framework of the Erasmus project – enables a flexible and individually adapted curriculum.

The research and teaching staff of IPS UW, aproaching to 100 people, is composed of outstanding specialists in political science. Among them there are experienced researchers, analysts and commentators of the political scene, but most of all – excellent academic teachers.

The uniqueness of the Institute for Political Science is underlined by its central location in the very midtown of Warsaw. All courses are held on the main campus of the University of Warsaw, in the premises on the other side of Krakowskie Przedmieście (the main seat of the Faculty) and on 67 Nowy Świat Street (the Institute’s seat).
